I get asked a lot if staying home alone most evenings gets lonely. And the answer is sometimes yes, but actually mostly no.
I am busy all morning at work, then busy in the afternoons with my goblin so when Friday night rolls around and I don’t have plans, then I really look forward to an evening at home on my own.
I prep my plans in advance so I look forward to it all day and then when goblin is in bed for the night, I get to enjoy some me time! Self care is so important, especially if you’re running yourself ragged caring for others all day long. Take the time to look after yourself and give yourself a break!
If you find the prospect of an evening alone daunting/boring/sad (if you’re a busy mum you will not feel these things) then here are my top tips for treating yourself to a lush night in!
Have yourself a really nice dinner, just for you
Prepare it a little in advance if you can so you don’t spend most of your precious evening slaving over a hot stove.
Make your favourite dish or buy your favourite pizza and add some extra toppings. Have the condiment you don’t allow yourself to have in the week. Go crazy.
Better still, get a takeaway! No work, less washing up and a well deserved treat for making it to Friday in one piece.
2. Pick a new movie to watch or revisit an old favourite
Select it in advance so again you don’t spend most of the night trying to decide what to watch. Trust me. I’ve wasted HOURS this way.
Have your meal, wine and snacks within reach and just enjoy getting lost in a movie. Put your phone away too. Facebook can wait.
3. Have a long soak in the bath
How often do you really get to do that? Just run a bath and sit in it and enjoy the relaxation. I add candles, a glass of something and some soft music when I’m indulging. It’s peaceful.
The bath will relax your muscles, soothe any aches and make you completely wind down. Bonus: you will also be clean as a whistle when you get out, so it’s the perfect time to throw on a fresh pair of pjs or your favourite lounge clothes, straight from the dryer.
4. Pamper yourself
Give yourself a face mask, a manicure or a deep hair conditioning. Something that makes you feel like you. You can enjoy the effects for the next few days.
5. Get lost in a good book
There really isn’t anything quite like getting into bed early and reading a good book. I used to read so much but life got busy and the tech options increased so I found my escape/me-time was always Netflix or TV. But reading a good book is so much better. I got back into reading by rereading my favourite books again to get my reading mojo back.
I love how you look forward to picking the book up again so you can escape back into that story!
6. Pour yourself a glass of good wine and enjoy some luxury chocolates
Because my god, why can’t we enjoy the indulgence, the decadence and the endorphins?
Don’t save that special bottle for a special occasion with friends – make your date night with yourself the special occasion and enjoy the wine! Sip it slowly, relax and enjoy just ‘being’.
